Yungang Grottoes Highlights
Located at the southern foot of Wuzhou Mountain west of Datong, the Yungang Grottoes were first carved in the 5th century CE and completed over more than 60 years. The site stretches about 1 kilometre and preserves 45 major caves with more than 59,000 statues. Renowned for blending Gandharan, Persian and traditional Chinese artistic elements, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001 as a landmark of Silk Road cultural exchange.
